Holistic health is an approach to medicine that considers an entire person’s being including the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. The theory behind holistic health is that by gaining a proper balance one will be able to achieve optimal health and wellness. Holistic health isn’t as mainstreamed as other medical practices, but its methods can be just as effective. Below you will five five widely practices of complementary and alternative medicine.

Alternative Medical Systems

These type of healing practices were developed thousands of years ago outside of the Western world of medicine. One examples of alternative medical systems is traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM is based on the theory that all of the body’s organs rely on one another and to truly be healthy the organs must be in balance. Popular TCM treatments include acupuncture, acupressure, and cupping therapy.

Other types of alternative medical systems that fall into this category includes, Ayurveda, homeopathy, and naturopathic medicine.

Mind-Body Interventions

Mind-body practices are treatments that help enhance the mind’s positive impact on the body.  Mind-body therapies include:

  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Guided imagery
  • Biofeedback
  • Yoga

The idea that the mind and body are connected is a notion that has been around for years. However it may be unfamiliar to those in Western medicine. For a long time, Western medicine classified the mind and body as two separate entities, but now as more research has come about, it has been revealed that there is a link between the mind and body.

Biologically-Based Therapies

Biologically-based therapies use naturally occurring substances that stem from plants, minerals and other biological materials. There are a variety of therapies that use naturally occurring substances such as aromatherapy, herbal medicine, and dietary supplements.

Manipulative and Body-Based Methods

Manipulative and body-based practices focus on the structural or systematic imbalances of the soft tissues, bones and joints, and the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Two popular methods include massage therapy and chiropractic. Manipulative and Body-Based Methods are intended for conditions like anxiety and stress, low back pain, sports injury, migraines, and more.

Energy Therapies

Energy therapies focus on brining energy to a patient or balancing the energy within a patient. The idea of energy therapies is that you can manipulate the energy fields that are within and around a person’s body. By successfully manipulating the energies you can the improve health and well-being. These treatments can utilize light, sound and magnets. Other types of energy therapies include Reiki, Qigong, and therapeutic touch.
